Cheech and CHong
“Cheech & Chong” aka Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong are an incredibly popular comedy act from back in the 1970’s; They are best known for their marijuana inspired comedy films, their most popular being the infamous “Up In Smoke”, released in 1978, which generated a profit of over $47 million in the US, and later went onto generate over $100 million worldwide.
The film obtained a cult status, and many years after it’s release became somewhat of an urban legend amongst many college and university students. In November 2000, when the much-anticipated, digitally re-mastered version of the film was released, thousands upon thousands of people rushed out to purchase it; the duo still retains its iconic status to this day.
As such a wide variety of products with the name “Cheech & Chong” have been created and are sold all over the world. Ranging from T-Shirts to Coffee Mugs, there aren’t many colleges/ universities in the world where you will not find the name “Cheech & Chong” printed somewhere.
Cheech & Chong are still in fashion, and have a huge following even to this day, ranging from university/ college students to aging-hippies and modern day rave-goers.
Here’s a little history regarding the Duo.
Cheech Marin was born in Los Angeles, and in 1968 fled the US to avoid the Vietnam War draft. He settled in Vancouver where he met his partner Tommy Chong, and the two formed a duo which was due to go down in history as one of the most popular comedy acts of all time.
They first started as a live act, featuring comedy antics combined with various musical styles, and then moved onto to selling albums featuring their most popular acts.
“Cheech & Chong” became an overnight success when in 1972 they released their most famous album entitled “Big Bambu”; which became the largest selling comedy recording of all time, and kept a hold of its title for quite a few years thereafter.
Cheech & Chong are still working within the entertainment industry today; Cheech has appeared in many successful films, mainly small roles, such as Quentin Tarantino’s “From Dusk Till Dawn” and “Desperado”.
Tommy Chong has a part in the TV series “That 70’s Show”, playing pretty much the same role as he always did. He also played a part in a film entitled ”The Wash”, in which his character supplies marijuana to a character named D-Lo (played by Hip-Hop/ R&B star, Snoop Dogg), which is again pretty much the same role as he always played.
The film has a variety of successful Hip-Hop/ R&B artists playing various roles throughout. Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg play lead roles; Eminem has a small role as a psychopath named Chris and Ludacris has a small a cameo within the film.
The comedy of Cheech & Chong has always been musically orientated from their beginnings; Cheech & Chong’s “Up in Smoke” film was actually the first to feature any Punk Rock groups on camera, as the style was still relatively new within the music industry, and was yet to be commercialised.
In the film, the duo performed a song entitled “Earache my Eye”; the successful Metal group, Korn, recently released a cover version of this song.
So I suppose it’s fair to say that Cheech & Chong are still very much prevalent within the music industry today.
Either way, whether you remember them from their musical influences or for their comedy style, Cheech & Chong are here to stay.
